ICT Authority Launches Consultation on
Radio Frequency (RF) Safety

Thursday 3 September, 2009, 10.00 – 13.00 hours
Le Sirius, Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel

With the recent concerns expressed by different stakeholders regarding the potential hazards of Radio Frequency (RF) radiation from radio base stations (antennes relais), the Information and Communication Technologies Authority is initiating a consultation process as from 10.00 am on Thursday 3rd September 2009 at Le Sirius, Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel.

The aim of this exercise is two-fold. Firstly the ICT Authority wants to explain to stakeholders the technical concepts behind Radio Frequency (RF) safety and for them to take cognizance of the current regulatory framework in Mauritius with regard to RF safety.

The other is to launch a consultation process whereby the views of key stakeholders are sought in order to ensure that the issues regarding the installation of base stations are dealt with in a consensual manner.

As such the consultation exercise will feature presentations by senior officials of the ICT Authority and Dr Vikass Monebhurrun, Associate Professor with over ten years’ experience in RF and RF-related research from France’s prestigious SUPELEC institute.

Thursday’s exercise as such is expected to be one of a series of similar events on EMF and RF safety.

The Honourable Mohammed Asraf Ally Dulull, Minister of Information and Communication Technology will officially launch the consultation process at 10.00 am.  The programme will go on till 1.00 pm.

Amongst the stakeholders will be telecommunication operators, officials from local authorities, government departments and parastatal bodies, representatives from consumer organisations as well as researchers from academia.
