The ICT Authority has as function under section 18 (1) (b) of the ICT Act 2001 (as amended) “to provide economic and technical monitoring of the information and communication industry in accordance with recognised international standard practices, protocols and having regard to the convergence of technology”. Also under section 18 (1) (n) of the Act, the Authority must “ensure the safety and quality of every information and communication services including telecommunication service and, for that purpose, determine technical standards for telecommunication network, the connection of customer equipment to telecommunication networks.”

Pursuant to the above the main duties of the Authority are to:

  • Ensure industry compliance with mandatory standards, including standards covering electromagnetic interference and health issues such as exposure to electromagnetic radiation;
  • Perform homologation of telecommunication and radio communication apparatus;
  • Determine appropriate technical standards where necessary to:
    • Avoid disruption to telecommunications networks
    • Ensure interoperability of the standard telephone service
    • Minimise radiocommunications interference and
    • Protect public health and safety.
  • Follow the work of the relevant ITU-T Study Groups and attend Study Group meetings;
  • Represent Mauritius in international conferences on telecommunications including the ITU-T World Telecommunication Standardisation Assembly (WTSA) and World Telecommunication Standardisation Conference (WTSC).
