Mauritius is a Member State of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the ICT Authority is the national representative of the Union . Also under section 18 (1) (g) of the ICT Act 2001, the Authority has as function to further the advancement of technology, research and development relating to information and communication technologies through modern and effective infrastructure taking into account the convergence of information technology, media, telecommunications and consumer electronics.”

In relation to the above, the main duties of the Authority are to:

  • Follow the work of the ITU working groups and advise the relevant units accordingly;
  • Advise the Authority with respect to the conventions and constitutions of the Union ;
  • Ensure the correspondence with the ITU with respect to approval of recommendations;
  • Advise the Authority on the events organized by the Union ;
  • Prepare reports on the impact of ITU decisions on the Mauritian Administration as and when required;
  • Follow the advancement of technology, research and development with respect to ICT;
  • Advise the Authority on convergence and Next Generation Networks (NGNs) and make sure that convergence of networks is realized in Mauritius.
